Aider
Open-source AI pair programming in your terminal
Terminal coding agent that edits files in your local git repo, commits with sensible messages, and works with whatever LLM you bring — Claude, GPT, or local models via Ollama. Free, Apache-2.0, installed from PyPI.

What it does
Aider is a terminal-based pair programmer that edits code directly in your local git repository, committing changes with clear messages as it works. Git is the source of truth: every AI edit is a diff you can inspect and revert.
It is bring-your-own-LLM by design — Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, or local models through Ollama and LM Studio — with support for 100+ programming languages.
Aider is free under the Apache 2.0 license, installed from PyPI, and has remained one of the most-used open-source terminal coding agents since 2024. Your only cost is the model inference you bring.
AI stack
Bring-your-own-LLM: works with hosted frontier models or local models via Ollama, LM Studio, and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
From the AXIS Launch team
Treating git as the interface — every AI change a reviewable, revertible commit — remains the most trustworthy design in the coding-agent space, and BYO-model means no lock-in. Question for the maintainers: how is the project sustained financially as commercial agents absorb the casual users?
