What it does
Shortwave, built by ex-Google engineers, rebuilds the email client around an AI assistant that can search years of your history to answer questions, draft replies in your voice, and triage mail into bundles.
As of 2026 there is no permanent free tier of consequence: individual plans run about $18/mo, Business $24/user/mo annual (AI search over 5 years of history), Premier $36-45 with unlimited history, and Max around $100-120 with the highest AI quotas.
The hard constraint: it is Gmail-only. Outlook and Microsoft 365 are not supported.
From the AXIS Launch team
AI search over years of email history is the feature that makes this a memory prosthetic rather than another pretty inbox, and charging real money for it is more honest than ad-funded email. If you're the maker: is Gmail-only a permanent architectural bet or a sequencing decision?
